Soma contains the active ingredient Carisoprodol and is a fairly effective skeletal muscle relaxant. Soma relaxes muscles and relieves pain and discomfort caused by strains, sprains, spasms or other muscle injuries. It works by blocking pain messages sent to the brain. Usage
Adult dosage of soma is one 350 mg tablet, three times daily and at bedtime. Soma is not recommended for patients below 12 years of age. Soma is best taken preferably with food so that it doesn’t upset your stomach. Soma can be taken on an empty stomach if it doesn’t trouble your stomach.Soma should not be used for more than 2-3 weeks at a time.
Do not take 2 doses of Soma at the same time in case you have missed an earlier dose. Simply skip the missed dose and go back to the original dosing schedule.
Soma is contraindicated (not to be used) for persons allergic or hypersensitive to Carisoprodol, for those having acute intermittent porphyria and those who are sensitive to a Carbamate like for example Meprobamate.
Caution: Soma comes under US FDA Pregnancy Category C which means it can be prescribed to a pregnant woman only if the doctor feels that the benefits of using the medicine far outweighs the risks associated with it.
Caution: Soma overdose may cause low blood pressure, seizures, muscle contractions and even hallucinations. If you suspect Soma overdose seek immediate medical attention.
Side Effects
Most common side effects of Soma are depression, dizziness, drowsiness, facial flushing, fainting, headache, nausea, rapid heart rate, stomach upset, tremors, vertigo, and vomitingBetween the first and fourth doses of Soma some patients could develop allergic reactions such as itching, red welts on the skin, and skin rash. If these side effects persist consult your doctor to take remedial steps.
Precaution
If you combine Soma with alcohol or other prescription medicines the possibility of overdose occurring is likely.Inform your doctor if you have acute intermittent porphyria, kidney or liver disease because in that case your doctor will have to specially monitor you if you are prescribed Soma.
