Rivotril contains the active ingredient clonazepam which is anti-epileptic agent. Rivotril is used for treating convulsive disorders like epilepsy especially in patients with petit mal seizures (absence seizures). It is used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. It is also used for treating Lennox-Gastaut syndrome which is a petit-mal variant.

Rivotril is manufactured by Roche and in the United States it goes by the brand name Klonopin and in Chile by the brand name Ravotril. It is available as tablets of strength 0.5mg 1 mg and 2 mg.

Usage

Rivotril dose depends on individual clinical response and is hence best directed by your doctor. Usually Rivotril is started on a low single dose per day and the maximum therapeutic dose is 20mg/day.

Rivotril can be taken with or without food as prescribed by your doctor.

Rivotril can be used with other anti-epileptic agents.

If you abruptly stop using Rivotril it may cause anxiety, irritability and insomnia and could even precipitate tremors and panic disorders. So consult your doctor before stopping the medication. Dosage should be gradually reduced.

Rivotril is contraindicated for persons allergic to clonazepam or other benzodiazepines. Rivotril should not be used by patients with liver disorders and narrow-angle glaucoma in addition to those who are drug dependant or addicted to alcohol.

Caution: Rivotril comes under US FDA Pregnancy Category D and its use by pregnant woman is not advised. Rivotril should not be used by nursing mothers as the medicine passes on to breast milk.

Caution: Rivotril overdose could cause continuing confusion, convulsions, drowsiness and even coma. If you suspect Rivotril overdose seek immediate medical attention.

Side Effects

Side effects of Rivotril are drowsiness, yellowing of skin, tremor, increased heart rate and problems in muscular coordination. If these symptoms persist and intensify consult your doctor immediately.

The side effects generally occur in the early stages of treatment with Rivotril and generally subside as the dose is gradually increased.

If you have chronic respiratory tract disorders Rivotril may cause increased salivation

Precaution

Keep Rivotril away from excess heat and moisture.

If you have kidney or liver problems inform your doctor before Rivotril is prescribed to you. Similarly inform your doctor if you are addicted to alcohol before being put on a course with Rivotril.
